Mission
To create searchable data to the benefit of the research process.
Background
A transcription transfers all information from a document- every letter, every number, all punctuation, and any other marks.
An extract transfers only the information that is important to your research.
An abstract might be used for a family photo. It could record a description of the actual photo e.g. size (6” x 4”), format (B&W or colour), paper or digital image, who owns it and where it is stored. The abstract could also include any names, dates or places known about the image as well.
Process
My Family History Australia services used in the process to achieve the outcome
- Transcriptions of selected census records, passenger lists, birth, death and marriage records.
- Extracts of selected census records and passenger lists
- Abstracts of selected images and census records
Outcome
Transcribing, extracting, or abstracting historical documents into a digital format and adding tags to digitised documents and images, is highly beneficial to the research process as it creates data that becomes searchable.
